We have an exciting vacancy for a 3 year ECVN Neurology Residency Programme commencing in February/March 2024.   

 

The ECVN approved residency programme in neurology and neurosurgery includes training in neuroanatomy, clinical neurology, neurosurgery, neuropharmacology, neuropathology amongst others.

 

 

Your role and responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a growing team including 4 neurology Diplomates, working in collaboration with our dedicated neurology nursing team. The role will include supported out-of-hours responsibilities at weekends, weeknights and bank holidays. 

 

Teaching and clinical research is provided and strongly supported by our team of highly recognised neurologists.

 

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant neurology experience
  • A completed rotating internship
  • Preferably, also have completed a neurology specific internship at a referral hospital.
  • General practice experience is desirable.

 

 

Our hospital facilities include a dedicated ICU staffed 24 hours a day, spacious wards with walk-in kennels, in-house 1.5T Siemens Magnetom Essenza MRI, 16 slice Siemens Somatom Emotion helical CT, digital radiography, digital fluoroscopy, a brand new Neurogen neurodiagnostic system (for nerve conduction studies, electromyography, evoked potentials, electro retinography and electroencephalography), a Samsung RS85 ultrasound system and Arthrex / Karl Storz Laparoscopic/thoracoscopic and arthroscopic imaging systems.

 

We encourage an evidence-based multi-disciplinary approach, supporting a process of continuous learning and a collegiate atmosphere. ECVN Neurology Residency Training Program at University Bern, CH 24/11/2023

Term: 3,5 years fixed term

The Small Animal University Hospital of the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern is a busy, multi-disciplinary, referral-only hospital in Switzerland, that is committed to providing high standards of patient care as well as postgraduate training (internships and residencies). The caseload is busy as well as varied yet provides a good learning and teaching environment. Strong team spirit spices the working days.

The neurology resident will be supervised and work in daily contact with two neurologists supported by European and American specialist clinicians in a wide range of disciplines (anaesthesia, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine (general and nephrology), emergency and critical care, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, ophthalmology). Our hospital contains excellent facilities of an advanced referral hospital including MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, electrophysiology equipment as well as a wide range of neurosurgery equipment for computer-assisted brain and spine surgery, videoendoscopy, microsurgery and minimally invasive surgery. On-site physiotherapy is also provided to our patients.

During Clinic Time, the neurology resident will work under the supervision of the neurologists and will be involved in the daily care of patients, consultations, diagnostic procedures, and neurosurgeries. The resident will take part in weekly neurology (journal cubs, book clubs ...), radiology and neuropathology rounds. The resident will also be involved in clinical teaching of students and interns. Hospital emergency “out of hours” duty is also included.

During Off-Clinic Time, the resident will have 4-5 months to fulfill the required ECVN credentials which includes clinical rotations in related specialities, plan and carry out residency research projects. Participation to international congresses is also encouraged. The resident will also have five weeks of holidays – time to enjoy beautiful Switzerland with breathtaking landscapes and multiple possibilities for sports and other recreational activities.

This residency program will be suited for someone with 1) veterinary degree, 2) previous general practice experience and/or 3) previous general and/or specialty internship, 4) very good knowledge of German, French and English languages. Ideally, the candidate will already have some clinical experience in neurology.

PhD student position in Neurology at University Bern, CH 24/11/2023

The Division of Clinical Neurology has an open position as PhD for a project together with the Division of Neurological Sciences (Anna Oevermann) investigating the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) including tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in canine and feline brain tumors. The project is embedded into a larger research initiative to develop an immunotherapeutical approach as adjunctive approach in antitumor therapy. For this laboratory-based project, a number of research techniques including cell isolation procedures, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and RNA sequencing will be applied. A close relation to Clinical Neurology is encouraged with the option to get involved in an ECVN residency program.

The PhD student will work in a multidisciplinary environment, receive committed scientific supervision and will be affiliated to the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) of the University Bern. Remuneration will be according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).

The PhD student should hold a veterinary degree, must fulfil the requirements for acceptance of the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) of the University Bern, must be highly motivated and able to work independently as well as in a team. Research results will be presented by the PhD student at international meetings. Therefore, good knowledge of written and spoken English is expected.

Neurology and Neurosurgery Residency at Royal Veterinary College, UK - 12/11/2023

Our clinical training residency in veterinary neurology and neurosurgery is a three-year program satisfying the training requirements needed to attain specialist certification in the European College of Veterinary Neurology.

The programme has a strong emphasis on clinical neurology and neurosurgery, and you will have primary case responsibility for a large and varied caseload. The clinical training program is well supported by six Neurology faculty members (including six Diplomates of the ECVN), four other residents, one rotating Small Animal intern, a team of dedicated neurology and rehabilitation nurses, a veterinary physiotherapist and final-year veterinary students on rotation. Specialists in internal medicine, orthopaedic and soft-tissue surgery, emergency medicine and critical care, cardiology, oncology, anaesthesia, ophthalmology, dermatology, radiology and pathology also support the program.

Clinical work is mainly with our small animal caseload in the QMHA, though our service does consult on neurological cases in the Equine Referral Hospital and for the Farm Animal Service. You will also participate in an out of hours on-call rota for neurological and neurosurgical emergencies. Facilities include on-site MRI (1.5T Philips), 320 slice computed tomography, fluoroscopy, wireless EEG system, modern neurosurgical facilities including an Ultrasonic Surgical System, Brainsight neuronavigation system, Viking electrodiagnostic system, a large purpose-built ICU, and a physiotherapy unit with hydrotherapy pool and an underwater-treadmill staffed by a veterinary physiotherapist and dedicated nurses.

Excellence in teaching and clinical research is also emphasised, with structured time off clinics allowed for study and the completion of research projects. The program includes regular clinical rounds, neuropathology rounds, journal club and resident seminar series.

 

Selection criteria for the Residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery

Along with the attributes and qualifications required it is also desirable if you have:

  • Evidence of completion of two years in general practice or one year rotating structured internship at the time of the start of the residency.

Specialists in internal medicine, orthopaedic and soft-tissue surgery, cardiology, oncology, radiation therapy, anaesthesia, ophthalmology, dermatology and radiology will also support the program.

AUNA ESPECIALIDADES VETERINARIAS is a multi-disciplinary referral-only hospital located in the east coast of Spain (Valencia).

Our hospital has boarded specialists in many disciplines: ECVS, ECVN, ACVIM(Onco), ECVDI, ECVIM(IM) amongst the 70 professionals of our team including specialists, clinicians, interns and support personnel. Being fluent or willing to become rapidly fluent in Spanish is mandatory. The Neurology/Neurosurgery team is currently formed by two ECVN diplomates, two residents and one neurology intern. 

This is a three-year ECVN-approved position starting in February 2024 with well-balanced neurology caseload that includes medical and surgical cases including OOH. Our current facilities offer an excellent working environment including currently a 16-slice CT scanner, electrodiagnostic equipment for EMG, BAER, ERG and nerve conduction studies, two fully equipped operating theatres with Storz HD video scopes, in-house laboratory, ICU room, cardiology and oncology suites, separated dog, cat and infectious wards, digital radiography, fluoroscopy, etc. A state-of-the-art new hospital of 2000sqm is starting construction and should finish in 2024 with 1.5T MRI, 10 consulting rooms, 5 operating theatres, electrodiagnostic room, etc.
